Firefighters survey storm damage at Thomas Fire burn area

Posted: Updated:

Crews will be flying over the Thomas Fire burn area Wednesday and Thursday to asses damage that may have been caused by the recent mudslide storm to the Forest Area.

Fire officials said firefighters have been cleared out of the fire zone because of safety hazards caused by the intense debris flow. Once the area is deemed safe, they will return to the fire area and will continue suppression and repair efforts.

There is currently a closure order that covers the burned area and the surrounding areas in the Los Padres Forest. Officials said the forest is closed within the Thomas Fire perimeter on the Santa Barbara and Ojai Ranger District and the Sage Hill Group Campground us temporarily closed while crews use the area as a base camp.

Federal response teams are assessing areas within the burn to identify additional locations at risk for flooding, debris flows and other post-fire hazards. They will turn in their data to the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management and Ventura County Office of Emergency Services, who will develop emergency preparedness and response plans.

The Thomas Fire remains 92% contained and has burned 281,893 acres.
