Mother and son missing after Montecito mudslide

Posted: Updated:

Alejandro Benitez has spent nearly the last two days worried sick over the whereabouts of his 29-year old sister Fabiola Benitez and her nine-year-old son.

The two, who live on East Valley Road in Montecito, were caught in the slide.

"I'm scared, I'm sad," Benitez said.

He says other family members, including Fabiola's husband, her three-year-old son Ian, and her brother-in-law, survived the slide.

"My wife called to the hospital and then they found my brother, brother-in-law, and my little nephew," Benitez said.

Now Benitez is waiting for news on the rest of his family.

There are resources in the area for those looking for missing loved ones. The First Presbyterian Church located at the corner of Constance Avenue and State Street is offering services. Officials at the church say family members can provide information to the church about missing loved ones, which will then be passed along to law enforcement officials. There are also social workers and mental health staff on site to help those affected.

People can also call 833-688-5551 toll free to get information about those who are missing.
