Highway 101 is closed for 12 miles between Milpas Street and Highway 150 through Santa Barbara as crews work to clear the highway of mud, water, and debris after massive mudslides Tuesday morning.

Now that the railroad tracks in Montecito have been cleared of debris, travelers who need to get around the closure have a few options:

Train

  • Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains are serving Ventura, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, San Luis Obispo, and all other stations indicated on the schedule, but Amtrak warns there could be delays.

Ferry

Interstate 5

  • Southbound drivers take Highway 46 or Highway 166 east to reach I-5
  • Northbound drivers north take Highway 126 east to I-5

Santa Barbara County Public Works has closed Tepusquet Road east of Santa Maria from Santa Maria Mesa Road to Highway 166 because of a large volume of motorists being routed through the area by GPS as a shortcut. Only local traffic and emergency vehicles will be allowed through.

Highway 101 is expected to remain closed until Monday, Jan. 15.
