Santa Barbara surgeon Dr. Mark Montgomery identified as victim of mudslide

As more mudslide victims are identified, we are learning more about them. Beloved Santa Barbara orthopedic hand surgeon Dr. Mark Montgomery and his family were caught in the mudslide. Since his identification, there has been an outpouring of support from his patients on social media. 

“Great doctor and a great friend," said Dr. Michael Behrman, his business partner.

On social media, comments can be found: 

“He was an amazing man and hand specialist whom I had the pleasure of being treated by many times for the last 22 years,” wrote Christina Mertes.

And another from Sasha Gonzales, who wrote, “I found out the excellent surgeon that repaired my wrist in 2011 was one of the deceased; may his friends and family find peace.”

“He fixed my hand after a camping accident in 2012, two weeks before my wedding,” David Iglesias told KSBY News. “I cut all the tendons in my fingers. He was able to reattach them. I have full use and feeling in my hand because of Dr. Montgomery."

Here is a statement from Cottage Health:

We’re very saddened by the death of Dr.  Mark Montgomery, who was a member of the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Montgomery was a respected orthopedic surgeon who specialized in hand surgery. We extend sincere condolences to his family and all who knew him as a colleague and friend. This is an enormous loss for our community.

Dr. Montgomery's 22-year-old daughter Caroline Montgomery is confirmed to have died in her brother’s arms. Dr. Montgomery’s wife, son and other daughter survived.

An excerpt from Associated Hand Surgeons reads,

Mark T. Montgomery, M.D. graduated from Princeton University and Columbia University Medical School. Following residency training in Orthopedic Surgery at the New York Orthopedic Hospital, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, he completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Montgomery is certified in advanced microsurgery. He is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery, has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery, and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Montgomery was appointed Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery while at Columbia. He was a clinical instructor in the department of Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He worked at Boston Children's Hospital, one of the nation's premier pediatric referral centers, and at Brigham and Women's Hospital, which is renowned in the treatment of arthritis. In addition to patient care, his responsibilities included resident teaching and medical research.
