Card skimmers found at San Luis Obispo gas pumps

Posted: Updated:

County Weights and Measures Inspectors are reporting two cases of credit card fraud at gas stations in San Luis Obispo County. Inspectors said over the holidays they found two credit and debit card skimming devices embedded in local gas pumps.

The devices were found during an inspection of 204 gas pumps at 25 gas stations across the county over the 2017 holiday season.

Skimming devices copy card numbers and PINs and send the user's personal information to a remote scammer.

Inspectors said they found one device that captures card and PINs and another that transfers card information using Bluetooth technology, allowing the transfer of card information without the need to open the gas pump to retrieve the device storing card information.

Inspectors said they don't know how widespread the issue there is usually no visible sign that a card skimmer could be at a gas pump. They encourage gas pump users to report any suspicious activity.

Drivers can reduce the risk their information being stolen by paying in cash, running debit cards as credit, avoiding pumps that appear broken and keeping a close eye on their card statements.
