Fourth graders at Teach Elementary School raise over $1,328.28 for Thomas Fire Victims

Posted: Updated:

A fourth grade class at Teach Elementary School in San Luis Obispo raised $1,328.28 for victims of the Thomas Fire.

Each year, teacher Shawna Robson teaches her students about entrepreneurship and money through a project-based learning activity. This year, her students created a "mini-mall"… marketed their products and sold them to their fellow classmates. Collectively, they created and sold bookmarks, wallets, holiday decorations, stress balls and more.

"Me and my partner got to sell 'sporty sport wallet.' They're a wallet with football team logos and if they didn't like sport they could buy just the plain wallet," said Teach Elementary student Zee Malama.

The students say this was a fun lesson about entrepreneurship, but they realize it was about more than just creating a business to sell products.

Fourth grader, Carly Sass said of the victims, "they've lost so much and we feel like if we have so much then maybe we can give a little bit of our stuff to them so we raised money."
