Trial against Plains All American Pipeline for 2015 oil spill set for February

Posted: Updated:

A trial date has been set for the People v. Plains All American Pipeline, which stems from the May 2015 oil spill at Refugio State Beach.

The jury trial is scheduled to begin on Feb. 5, 2018, in Santa Barbara Superior Court.

The oil company is facing criminal charges for the approximately 140,000-gallon oil spill that occurred as a result of a ruptured pipeline. The spill was blamed for the deaths of more than 100 marine mammals and nearly 200 birds. Federal regulators have said corrosion on the outside of Plains Line 901 caused it to break.

A charge against Plains employee James Colby Buchanan for failing to follow the company's spill response plan was reportedly dismissed, but Plains still faces that charge and Buchanan is expected to be called as a witness.
