French Hospital Medical Center receives grant for pet therapy program

Posted: Updated:

Patients and visitors at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo may see more canine companions roaming the halls than usual.

The hospital is expanding its three-year-old Pet Therapy Program, thanks to a grant from the Harold J. Miossi Charitable Trust.

This grant will assist in creating a more structured program in the next three years by helping pet therapy volunteers improve training for therapy animals, share best practices and increase the number of visits by 10 percent each year.

"[That] means that we're able to find more volunteers and more pets and bring them in for longer periods of time at the hospital to expose our patients and visitors and our guests to that wonderful therapy," said French Hospital President and CEO Alan Iftiniuk.
