Central Coast native Richard Gearhart joined KSBY News in July of 1990 as a reporter and weather anchor. After co-anchoring Daybreak since 1991, he became co-anchor of KSBY News at 6, 10 and 11pm in January of 2018.

“I’ve spend the majority of my life keeping Central Coast residents informed and helping them start their day. I’m looking forward to this new chapter, and to many more years to come with the news team here at KSBY,” Richard said. 

Richard was born and raised in San Luis Obispo County. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and received a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism. He also holds a master’s degree in agriculture from Cal Poly and attended the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education at U.C. Santa Barbara. 

In 2006, Richard returned to Cal Poly where he is currently an Associate Professor, helping shape the journalists of tomorrow.

Richard began his broadcasting career on the radio at KIQO in Atascadero, KPRL in Paso Robles and then KJDJ in San Luis Obispo.

Richard is married and enjoys spending time with his two sons: Hayden and Jack.

    Lompoc Police Detectives say they've arrested a man accused of killing a transient man in a dog park in April. Kenneth Whalen, 30, is accused of killing Theopheus Bennett, 33.
