Fire crews: 'Explosion' at Windset Farms determined as ruptured pipe

Posted: Updated:

An explosion reported in Santa Maria was determined to be caused by a ruptured pipe, and authorities say the situation was controlled by Saturday afternoon.

Fire crews were sent to a haz-mat call to Windset Farms, located at 1650 S. Black Road, just before 5 a.m.

The Santa Maria Fire Department says a release of CO2 liquid ruptured a pipe buried in the ground and was heard and felt by people at the site.

The leak happened near a greenhouse, away from storage tanks. Fire crews say a plant worker was able to shut off the CO2 flow quickly, and the vapor dissipated into the air. Haz-mat response was then canceled.

One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Their condition is unknown.

The cause of the rupture is also unknown. Black Road was closed temporarily as fire crews assessed the area.
