UPDATE: Murder investigation underway after 2 found dead in California Valley

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (7:35 p.m.) - The names of those who died are not being released just yet, "pending positive identification and notification of next of kin," according to a press release. "The Sheriff's Office has no information indicating that there is any danger to the public related to this incident at this time."

UPDATE (7:20 p.m.) - Commander Brian Hascall with the sheriff's office says two men found dead in a California Valley home appeared to have been deceased in the house for more than one day.

"It appears that gunfire played a role in the deaths," said Hascall. "But exactly how the deaths occurred, we're still trying to figure that out at this point."

As for whether this was a murder-suicide, "That we're still trying to determine at this time. That will obviously be one of the primary scopes of the investigation," Hascall said.

It is the first murder investigation of the year for the sheriff's office.

"I think it is pretty infrequent to have homicides out here based on the population level, which is extremely sparse, but we have had increased calls for service and other issues out here because of the marijuana growing that's been going on."

Marijuana grows were permitted in California Valley last year, however, a new ordinance that went into effect January 1 prohibits marijuana growing in the area.

There were a number of dogs on the property. A person who is familiar with the animals came over and agreed to remove and kennel the dogs in order to help investigators.

Sheriff's officials do not know how many people lived inside the home.

 UPDATE (5:40 p.m.)

UPDATE (5:20 p.m.) - The sheriff's office has not released how the two people were killed. Investigators were waiting for a search warrant to go inside the home. The warrant was obtained minutes ago.

A woman reportedly found the two deceased people and called authorities.

The address is listed on San Luis Obispo County's online Registered Cannabis Cultivations map. There are hoop houses on the property but it is unclear if anything is growing inside.

ORIGINAL STORY - Authorities are investigating the deaths of two people found in a California Valley home Monday morning.

The call came in at about 11:15 a.m. reporting the deaths at a home on the 12000 block of Arrow Bear Trail off Highway 58, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office.

No other information has been released by authorities but as of 2:30 p.m., investigators remained on scene.

KSBY has a crew in the area and will update this story as information becomes available.
