'Diamonds and denim' the theme of 75th Santa Maria Elks Rodeo

Posted: Updated:

Denim and diamonds is the theme of this year's Santa Maria Elks Rodeo.

The event, now in its 75th year, will take place May 31 through June 3 with the parade set for June 2.

There will be horse- and bull-riding fun along with a rodeo-style business decorating contest put on by the City of Santa Maria.

Five queen candidates are also competing in fundraising for the Santa Maria community.

Organizers say they are emphasizing the "diamond" part of this year's event.

"It's a diamond year for us, and so we're gonna be doing diamond digs, digging for diamonds in the dirt and a lot of fun, exciting events,” said Johnna Clark, rodeo media director.

The rodeo has a new president, Peter Sterling, after former president Phil Harwick passed away last year.

A ceremony will be taking place to name a hill near the arena "Harwick Hill" in honor of the former president.
