Santa Barbara International Film Festival kicks off

The stars will be out on the South Coast as the Santa Barbara International Film Festival kicks off this week.

The film fest runs through Saturday, Feb. 10 at movie theaters throughout Santa Barbara.

Emilio Estevez's film "The Public" premieres Wednesday night at the Arlington Theatre.

On Thursday, actor Willem Dafoe will be honored with the Cinema Vanguard Award. Gary Oldman will be honored with the Maltin Modern Master Award on Friday.

Other actors to be honored during the film festival include Daniel Kaluuya, Gal Gadot, Hong Chau, John Boyega, Kumail Nanjiani, Mary J. Blige, and Timothee Chalamet who will receive Virtuosos Awards; Saoirse Ronan will receive the Santa Barbara Award; Sam Rockwell will receive the American Riviera Award; and Margot Robbie and Allison Janney will receive Outstanding Performers Awards.

Festival organizers are encouraging attendees to patronize Santa Barbara businesses which have suffered from the Thomas Fire and mudslides.
