Whittier Fire cause determined

Posted: Updated:

Nearly seven months after the Whittier Fire broke out along Highway 154 between Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, officials have released a cause, confirming a vehicle started the massive blaze.

The U.S. Forest service says no charges have been filed against the driver who officials say was driving in tall grass on the hillside above Camp Whittier when the July 8, 2017 fire broke out.

The fire burned a total of 18,430 acres and took nearly three months to contain.

Damage was estimated at more than $30 million.

The U.S. Forest Service says no other information related to the investigation is being released at this time due to the age of the driver.
