Santa Maria police officers were honored Tuesday for going above and beyond the call of duty.

The annual awards ceremony was hosted by the Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce and held Tuesday morning at the Radisson hotel.

The sworn and civilian members of the department who were honored were nominated for the awards by their peers.
Detective Jesus Caro was named Officer of the Year. He said he was shocked to receive the award.

"It feels great to get this award, but I can think off the top of my head many other officers who do the same thing I do who also deserve this award. I mean, it's not just (me), it's a team effort," he said.

Michael Balcorta was named Dispatcher of the Year.

Office assistant Kristina Aguilar was named Support Employee of the Year.

The Distinguished Service Award went to senior criminalistics technician Timothy Sutcliffe.

The Distinguished Team Award went to the 2017 SMPD SWAT Team.

The Mark Riddering Award, which is given to the officer who has made the greatest impact in the area of street narcotic enforcement, went to Officer Cole Whitney.

Officer Daniel Bridges received the Lifesaving Award for helping to resuscitate a woman who had suffered an opiate overdose.
