UPDATE: Man found dead of apparent suicide after sheriff's response in Avila Beach

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (9:10 p.m.) - Deputies say they found the man dead in his home at around 8 p.m. They obtained a search warrant to enter the home after going several hours without hearing anything from the man. They believe the 68-year-old shot himself. His identity was not released.

ORIGINAL STORY - San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's deputies are on scene in an Avila Beach neighborhood for a report of a suicidal man.

It's happening at a home on the 6200 block of Playa Vista Place.

The home is in a gated neighborhood known as the San Luis Bay Estates. Sheriff's officials are asking the public to stay away from the area.

They say deputies are trying to make contact with the man and get him to come out of the home peacefully. They do believe he has access to weapons.

The Sheriff's Office says there are no other people in the home at this time. Deputies responded to the home on Tuesday afternoon to conduct a welfare check after a family member called concerned about the man's well-being.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
