$1 cat spay/neuters offered at Santa Barbara County animal shelters

Posted: Updated:

In honor of Spay Day USA -- the last Tuesday in February -- the Responsible Pet Ownership Alliance will offer $1 spay or neuter surgeries for cats in Santa Barbara County.

The first 200 cats and kittens signed up for an appointment will get spayed or neutered, and get a rabies vaccination, for just $1.

"Every year we wind up with thousands of orphaned kittens that come through our shelters -- those place a huge burden on the facilities that are working hard to care for them as well as our foster homes," said Stacy Silva, Santa Barbara County Animal Services community outreach coordinator.

According to a release from the county health department, cats are "very efficient breeders and one unaltered cat can contribute up to 500,000 kittens over its lifespan."

The deal is for Santa Barbara County residents only. Cat owners can schedule an appointment at the following locations:

• Feb. 27 - SB County Animal Services, Santa Maria Animal Center, at 805-934-6968
• Feb. 25 - Santa Maria Valley Humane Society, at 805-349-3435
• Feb. 27 - Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society, at 805-688-8224
• Feb. 27 - Santa Barbara Humane Society, at 805-964-4777
• Feb. 27 - C.A.R.E. 4Paws, at 968-2273
• Feb. 27 - VIVA, at 805-735-6741
