California Valley father, son deaths were murder-suicide, autopsy shows

Posted: Updated:

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office says autopsy results confirm that a father and son found dead in a California Valley home last week died as the result of a murder-suicide.

The sheriff's office says Edward Chavez Mendoza, 70, died after being shot in the chest once by his son, Edmundo Eduardo Mendoza Jr., 37.

Mendoza Jr. died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the sheriff's office, who says his manner of death is listed as suicide.

Authorities were called to the home on the 12000 block of Arrow Bear Trail the morning of January 29 after receiving information about the deaths.

Investigators said they believed the two had already been dead for more than a day.

The address is listed on San Luis Obispo County's online Registered Cannabis Cultivations map.

The sheriff's office has not released information on a possible motive for the incident, which was the first homicide in San Luis Obispo County this year.
