New housing opens for struggling families in Santa Maria

Posted: Updated:

New housing is available to help struggling families in Santa Maria.

A new Good Samaritan Services living area -- located on West Cook Street -- has three units with two-bedroom, one-bath homes that have a kitchen, living room and backyard. Rent is $1,000 a month.

The housing is for families that have been part of the Good Samaritan Shelter program. The first family moved in just before Christmas.

Good Samaritan Shelter says affordable housing is in high demand in Santa Maria.

"More and more families are not able to afford the rents that are going up or they are living paycheck to paycheck or just have part-time jobs," said Kirsten Cahoon, Good Samaritan Shelter director of homeless services. The shelter has reportedly been at capacity for months.

The living area is a "clean and sober" facility with random drug and alcohol testing. Each unit also has a camera outside the door for safety.

For the project, the City of Santa Maria partnered with the Good Samaritan Shelter, which restored the building that had been an eyesore in the community.
