Sheriff tells Montecito residents to secure valuables, look out for suspicious people

Posted: Updated:

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office sent out a message Wednesday evening to Montecito residents in the mudslide disaster zone, asking them to secure their property.

Though deputies are present and the area is still under a disaster declaration with no current end date, the sheriff's office says it is up to property owners to ensure that their homes and belongings are safe.

The county offers the following suggestions:

  • Put up a fence (8+ feet requires a county permit) close to structures and away from waterways
  • Install security cameras
  • Install motion activated lighting
  • Move valuables to a safe place
  • Board up windows and doors

The sheriff's office hopes residents will look out for each other and report any suspicious people or activity to law enforcement.

The advice from deputies comes six days after two out-of-towners were arrested, accused of breaking into a Montecito home.
