Schilling earns ninth fall in Cal Poly’s 38-9 dual meet loss to Arizona State

Posted: Updated:

Colton Schilling won by fall and Tom Lane earned an overtime victory as Cal Poly concluded the dual meet portion of its wrestling schedule with a 38-9 loss to No. 8 Arizona State on Sunday inside Mott Athletics Center.

Schilling registered his team-leading ninth fall of the year, building up a 4-2 lead with a takedown and two-point near fall before pinning Nikko Villareal in 3 minutes, 37 seconds.

One of four Mustang seniors honored in a pre-match ceremony, Schilling is now 12-5 on the year.

Lane battled Cade Belshay to a 5-5 draw in regulation. After a scoreless sudden-victory period, Lane rode out the second overtime period and earned an escape seven seconds into the final period for a 6-5 victory.

Now 14-7 for the season, Lane tallied an escape in the first period and, trailing 5-1 after two periods, rallied with a penalty point for stalling, a two-point near fall and riding time by riding out the third period to knot the score at 5-5.

Arizona State, 11-3 for the year, opened the dual meet with back-to-back falls and added one more fall, a technical fall and three consecutive major decisions to win going away.

No. 1-ranked Zahid Valencia at 174, Kordell Norfleet at 184 and Josh Shields at 157 earned the falls for the Sun Devils.

Mustang 149-pounder Joshy Cortez nearly recorded his fifth consecutive win, but lost on riding time to No. 9 Jason Tsirtsis 2-1. Cortez slipped to 11-10 for the year.

Cal Poly, which finished winless in eight duals this season, spends the next two weeks preparing for the Pac-12 Championships on Feb. 25 at Oregon State.
