Portraits of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama were unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery Monday morning.

Former President Obama's portrait shows himself sitting in a chair, leaning forward, arms crossed with elbows on his knees and a serious look on his face. The artist, Kehinde Wiley, is a New York City portrait painter with a history of painting black people in heroic poses, according to Wiley's website and Wikipedia page.

Amy Sherald, of Baltimore, painted Michelle Obama sitting in a long gown with her hand under her chin and, also, a serious gaze.

The National Portrait Gallery is a historic art museum in Washington, D.C., as a part of the Smithsonian Institution.
