A woman was stopped at the Santa Barbara Municipal Airport Friday afternoon for having a loaded firearm in her carry-on baggage.

Transportation Security Administration officials say they found a 9mm Glock 43 pistol with seven rounds of ammunition, including one in the chamber.

Officials say the woman was traveling from Santa Barbara to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Firearms, ammunition, firearm parts and realistic replicas of firearms are never allowed in carry-on baggage but can be claimed in checked baggage, as long as the flier tells the airline as they check in.

This was the first firearm discovery of the year in Santa Barbara. In 2016, two firearms were found. Overall, TSA recovered 3,957 firearms in carry-on bags nationally in 2017.

Federally, TSA can charge a person a penalty of up to $9,800 for having a loaded firearm in a carry-on bag. Each case is evaluated individually.
