San Luis Obispo boys basketball to play in CIF quarterfinals for the first time in nine years

Posted: Updated:

San Luis Obispo High School boys basketball is preparing for its first CIF quarterfinals appearance in nine years.

The season has seen quite the turnaround, especially compared to last year. SLO finished 12-17 during the 2016-17 season and third to last in the PAC 8. This year, led by third-year head coach Jeff Brandow, the Tigers are PAC 8 League co-champs and currently have a 23-7 overall record. The team's league title is also its first since 2008-09.

The Tigers credit the team's chemistry for the change.

"We stick together. We're a family. No one is left behind. If we lose, we lose together. If we win, we win together," said Mac McConnell, San Luis Obispo senior point guard. "We're not going to idolize someone for making the game-winning shot. Every play that led to that helped us win."

"I just think all our personalities are so great. We just like each other. So even though there are some guys who are different, we've enfranchised everybody," said Lukas Mackin, San Luis Obispo senior power forward.

San Luis Obispo will host Silverado High School (16-13, 8-4 Desert Sky) Tuesday night in the CIF Southern Section DivisIon 4AA quarterfinals.
