Santa Maria boys basketball prepares for first CIF Southern Section semifinals since 1985

Posted: Updated:

Santa Maria High School boys basketball continues its playoff quest Friday night as the team travels to La Puente for the CIF Southern Section Division 5AAA semifinals.

The Saints (20-7, 10-4 Los Padres League) are no stranger to big games on the road, as they recently upset top-seeded Garden Grove (27-2, 10-0 Miramonte League) in the quarterfinals.

"We talked about playing our best ball in February, and I think our guys have kind of hit our stride," said Dave Yamate, Santa Maria head coach. "We've been playing the way we want to play. A lot of it is because of the experience as well. This is an experienced group, so they're taking it to heart and playing really hard."

"It's just confidence and trusting each other. We know that if we go out there and play how we're capable of playing, we can beat anybody. It's just trusting each other and stuff like that," said Joey Nevarez, Santa Maria senior guard.

"Every guy has the same goal and that's to win each and every game that we play in every night," explained Blake Truhitte. "We've been able to go out and do that."

This is Santa Maria's first trip to the semifinals since 1985.
