No. 14 Mustangs beach volleyball takes two of three to open season

The Cal Poly beach volleyball team opened the 2018 season Friday by winning two of its first three matches, including beating two top ten ranked teams at the opening day of its tournament at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

The No. 14 Mustangs beat No. 2 Pepperdine 3-2, No. 10 Grand Canyon 3-2 but fell to No. 7 LSU 3-2.

In the first match of the day against the Tigers, Emily Sonny and Samantha Manley swept LSU’s Haleigh Nelson and Mandi Orellana 21-10, 21-11 at the No. 2 spot. The other win for the Mustangs came at the No. 3 spot. The duo of Hannah Hubbard and Raeann Greisen beat the Tigers’ Olivia Powers and Maddie Ligon 31-29, 21-17.

Cal Poly picked up its first win of the season in the second match of the day against GCU by getting wins at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Emily Sonny and Samantha Manley got the win at the No. 2 spot 21-16, 21-16. Adlee Van Winden and Brayden Gruenewald won at the No. 4 spot 22-20, 10-21, 15-12 and the duo of Heather Pembroke and Macy Gordon won 21-19, 21-17 at the No. 5 position.

In the final match of the night against the No. 2 ranked Waves, the Mustangs got wins from the No. 1, 2 and 5 spots. At the No. 1 position, the duo of Tia Miric and Torrey Van Winden beat Brooke Bauer and Madalyn Roh 21-18, 11-21, 15-11. Samantha Manley and Emily Sonny beat Deahna Kraft and Corinne Quiggle 23-21, 14-21, 15-13 from the No. 2 spot. The pairing of Pembroke and Gordon beat Maddie Dilfer and Jordan Ferrari 21-18, 21-19 at the No. 5 spot to earn Cal Poly its first-ever win over Pepperdine in beach volleyball.

Cal Poly, now 2-1, stays in the desert to take on Nebraska Saturday at 3 p.m. PST in Tempe, Ariz.
