San Luis Obispo girls soccer to play in CIF semifinals for third time in program history

Posted: Updated:

Two years ago, Brittney Viboch was a sophomore at Cal Poly and working as an assistant coach for San Luis Obispo High School girls soccer. That year, she helped the Tigers advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinals, where the team fell to Yorba Linda, 2-1.

This year, Viboch is the head coach and once again leading the Tigers to CIF Southern Section semifinals, this time in Division 2.

San Luis Obispo girls soccer are PAC 8 League champions with an overall record of 22-1. The Tigers are also ranked 19th in the state and 64th in the country according to MaxPreps.

During the first round of playoffs, San Luis Obispo received home field advantage where they hosted Agoura High School. The girls were down 3-1 in the second half and put on a thrilling 4-3 victory in the final five minutes.

The team then traveled south for both its second round and quarterfinal matches where the Tigers defeated Warren and Redondo Union High School respectively.

Due to the result of a coin flip, the team will once again travel south, this time to face Sunny Hills in the semifinals. That's 1,244 miles round trip for the three games.

Despite the long travel hours and early departures, Viboch says the process conditioned the girls mental game. She also says the success of the team lays on a foundation of team chemistry, communication, and finishing opportunities.

"It's been a pure focus on communication, chemistry, and finishing your chances when you get them," said Viboch. "We knew when it comes to playoffs, it comes down to who's going to put the ball into the back of the net. Sometimes you get one chance and sometimes you can get 10, but it only takes one."

"During league, we worked really hard. We started off a little rough. As we kept going, we got more confident in ourselves and worked together as a team," said Sarah Attala, San Luis Obispo senior defender and team captain.

San Luis Obispo will play at Sunny Hills on Tuesday, kick off is at 3 p.m.
