Red Cross shelter opens at noon for Santa Barbara County storm evacuees

Posted: Updated:

The American Red Cross opened a shelter for storm evacuees in Santa Barbara Wednesday.

The evacuation center opened at noon at the Earl Warren Showgrounds located at 3400 Calle Real.

Officials say the Red Cross is prepared to shelter people around the clock, long-term, if needed.

Residents are urged to find their emergency kits and prepare to evacuate.

A recommended evacuation warning has already been issued for residents of Santa Barbara County near the Thomas, Sherpa and Whittier wildfire burn areas.

People in those neighborhoods are strongly encouraged to relocate.

Officials say people in areas at high risk of flooding and debris flows could face loss of life and property if they do not leave in time.

County emergency managers say a mandatory evacuation may be issued at some point Wednesday. In that case, everyone will be asked to leave the area by 9 a.m. Thursday.
