Cabrillo falls in OT to Warren in CIF-SS 3AA Championship, 47-42

After forcing overtime with a buzzer-beater, the Cabrillo girls basketball team couldn't hang on against Warren in the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA Championship game, falling to the Bears, 47-42, at Colony High School Saturday night.

Warren center Kaeani Berry connected on a pair of free throws with under a minute to play in the fourth quarter to make it 39-35 in favor of the Bears. Cabrillo answered quickly with a nice rebound-put-back by Erin Jenkins, cutting the deficit down to two.

On the ensuing inbound, Warren threw the ball away to Cabrillo and Jesse Jenkins knocked down a shot off the glass as time expired in regulation, tying the game 39-39.

Berry put the game out of reach in overtime with a pair of big baskets down low for the Bears, while Cabrillo's Erin Jenkins and Alexa McCune fouled out of the game.

It may not have ended the way the Conqs would've liked, but head coach Jared McCune was happy with how his girls competed.

"I'm proud of them. They played hard," McCune said. Defensively, we were solid but Warren battled us. They were strong as well and took away a lot of things that we tried to do. It was a hard defensive battle, but in end, we fell short."

Senior Erin Jenkins, who finished the night with a team-high 13 points, reflected on the accomplishments of her team this season.

"Every practice, we work our hardest no matter what, and just having us as a senior group, I love playing with them," Jenkins added. They're amazing, and we wouldn't be able to do this without our senior group and our entire team."

Cabrillo takes home a second place finish in its first-ever trip to the CIF Southern Section title game. The Conquistadores' season is not over yet as they'll begin the CIF State playoffs on Wednesday, March 7. Their first round opponent has yet to be determined.
