San Luis Obispo commissions colorful mural at SLO Swim Center

Posted: Updated:

A colorful masterpiece is nearly complete at the SLO Swim Center in San Luis Obispo.

Local artist Nate Erlin is working on an original mural full of color and imagination in the lobby of the swim center at Sinsheimer Park.

"It's nice to be appreciated for my work and have people see it, enjoy it," Erlin said.

You've likely seen Erlin's work before. He painted the utility box at the corner of Marsh and Higuera streets. After that, he was asked to paint another box outside the swim center, which is what led to the mural.

"The long shape of it kind of gave me the opportunity to do a multi-stage image and it also has this fluidity to it where people are working through, so I get to use some of the similar techniques I like to do with the electrical box and public design where people are kind of moving by fast," Erlin said.

The piece of art was commissioned by the city, and while Erlin says he created the sketch for the mural without any guidelines from the city, the images guests will see are inspired by spaces around the area.

"It starts out in a pool environment," Erlin said. "It kind of goes into this fantasy nature realm and returns to a natural or a pool environment where there's a lifeguard."

Erlin says he hopes to finish the mural by the end of the week. As if that isn't impressive enough, he sketched it free hand.
