Santa Barbara County Sheriff's officials say an inmate at the county jail attacked a custody deputy on Monday.

Officials say the deputy was removing an inmate from a housing unit around 7:30 p.m. when 28-year-old Thunderhawk Gutierrez of Santa Maria punched him in the face.

According to the sheriff's office, the deputy and another responding deputy were able to gain control of Gutierrez.

The deputy was taken to the hospital. He is expected to return to work soon, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover.

The sheriff's office is requesting the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office charge Gutierrez with battery on a peace officer, assault likely to
cause great bodily injury and obstructing/resisting an executive officer.

Hoover says Gutierrez had been in jail since last Friday, when he was arrested by Santa Maria police on charges of assault likely to cause great bodily injury and inflicting corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant. He is being held on $30,000 bail.

This is the second local deputy to be attacked in a Central Coast jail this week. On Tuesday, a correctional deputy was reportedly assaulted at the San Luis Obispo County Jail.
