Latinos grab spotlight at Oscars, and hope to hold it

NEW YORK (AP) - The 90th annual Academy Awards were a moment of triumph for Latinos, but a watchdog group for Hispanic representation in media says Hollywood has a long way to go.

Alex Nogales is president of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. He says unless the six major movie studios meet with his coalition in the next 10 days, he will call for a boycott of one of them.

Despite accounting for 23 percent of frequent moviegoers, Hispanics are chronically underrepresented in the movies. A study by the University of Southern California found that only 3 percent of speaking characters in 2016's top movies were Latinos.

At Sunday's Oscars the Mexican-born filmmaker Guillermo del Toro won best director, Pixar's "Coco" won best animated film and best song, and Chile's "A Fantastic Woman" won best foreign language film.
