UPDATE: San Marcos High School placed on lockdown

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (9 p.m.) - The sheriff's office says it has several persons of interest. Detectives ask anyone with information about who lit the firework to call 805-683-2724 or leave an anonymous tip at 805-681-4171 or through the sheriff's office's website.

Students who place, throw or set off fireworks can be fined and/or sent to jail, according to deputies.

UPDATE (4 p.m.) - School officials say security camera footage is being used to identify the student(s) responsible for setting off a firecracker in a trash can at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara on Friday.

The incident prompted the school to go into lockdown at around noon. The lockdown was reportedly lifted at 12:40 p.m.

Officials say disciplinary actions will be taken against those responsible.

Meanwhile, students who are experiencing stress due to recent events at the school can seek help at a "compassion center" on campus staffed by mental health advisors and school counselors.

The center was established by the Santa Barbara Response Network. It was already on campus Monday because of last week's discovery of threatening graffiti on campus.

UPDATE (12:30 p.m.) - The Santa Barbara Unified School District confirms to KSBY News that a firecracker that was set off on campus prompted a lockdown Monday at San Marcos High School.

Students were told to shelter in place and no one was said to be hurt.

The district said it was not known who first made the 911 call.

Alerts were sent out to parents about the incident through the district's notification system.

The lockdown comes less than a week after graffiti threatening a school shooting was found in the girl's locker room. The graffiti was discovered on Wednesday, March 7. Two days later, more threatening graffiti was reportedly found in the boy's locker room.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is investigating the source of the graffiti messages. There is no word on any arrests at this time.

ORIGINAL STORY - San Marcos High School was placed on lockdown early Monday afternoon.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said shortly after noon that deputies and officials were responding to the school, located on the 4700 block of Hollister Avenue.

Sheriff's officials said they received reports of possible fireworks being set off in the area.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
