The principal of San Marcos High School will be demoted, the school board decided late Tuesday night.

The decision was made and announced in Santa Barbara during a special meeting of the Santa Barbara Unified School District, according to Chris Gallo, organizer of an effort to keep Ed Behrens as principal.

Hundreds of parents showed up at the meeting, rallying behind Behrens. Two-and-a-half hours after the meeting began, the board voted to reassign Behrens to teaching.

The move comes after some parents criticized the response by district and school administrators to a video and comments that appeared online featuring a male student describing how to kill female students.

Parents who believe the demotion stems from reaction to the January social media threat investigation started an SMHS Supporters of Ed Behrens Facebook Group.

The Santa Barbara Unified School District issued this statement in the days leading up to Tuesday night's decision:

The staff recommendation concerning the San Marcos High School Principal is a personnel item that limits our ability to comment. However, it can be stated that high school principals, like all other school district administrators, do not acquire tenure in their positions and are subject to release or reassignment every year. The District reviews all administrator assignments, taking into account a number of different factors including performance evaluations, with a view towards making decisions to retain or release administrators from their current position based upon the best interests of students.

Behrens served as the school's principal for six years and previously as assistant principal for 14 years.
