French Hospital reveals plans for major expansion

Posted: Updated:

Come November 2019, French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo will break ground on a project that will cost more than $100 million and double the hospital's size with a new 85,000-square foot, four-story tower.

"It really is about transforming the kind of care we can provide to our community," said Alan Iftiniuk, French Hospital Medical Center President/CEO.
That transformation will add 95 new private patient rooms, an eight-bed neonatal ICU, five additional ICU patient suites, a new front entrance and lobby, helipad, more space for imaging and labs, 90 additional parking spaces, and more.
"There will be less of a reason for residents of the county to go anywhere else for healthcare," said Leopold Selker, Community Board Chair.
This major construction will follow another undertaking, the expansion of the emergency department, which will begin in May.
With a growing population, physicians say this addition will benefit the community.
"The community does have growing needs. We saw that in the flu epidemic this year that more space would be ideal and we're happy to be able to provide that," said Andrea Tackett, cardiologist and Vice Chief of Staff.
The project architect says patients and family members won't even feel like they're at a hospital.
"Having a patient environment that's more hotel-like, more welcoming, can just take that stress level and help the whole healing process," said Brian Starr of Studio Design Group.
The president of the hospital says they will be announcing a campaign in the future to help support the massive undertaking, but the majority of funding will come from hospital operations.
