Cal Poly earns third shutout of season, blanking CSU Bakersfield 6-0

Posted: Updated:

Kyle Marinconz and Colby Barrick produced two-run singles and five Cal Poly pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts as the Mustangs shut out CSU Bakersfield 6-0 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night before a season-high 1,708 inside Baggett Stadium.

The hits by Marinconz and Barrick were part of a five-run third-inning Cal Poly rally and the Mustangs added another run in the fourth for the final tally of the game.

With the win, Cal Poly improved to 8-4 at home, 19-6 all-time against the Roadrunners and 13-14 for the season. CSU Bakersfield fell to 10-17. The two Central California rivals meet again next Tuesday at Hardt Field in Bakersfield.

Both teams mustered five hits and the leading hitter for each team was the first baseman.

Freshman Tate Samuelson singled twice for Cal Poly and Alec Daily led the Roadrunners with a single and double.

After the two-run singles by Marinconz and Barrick, Cal Poly scored the fifth run of the third inning on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

Bradlee Beesley’s sacrifice fly to right field cashed in the Mustangs’ sixth run of the game in the fourth.

CSU Bakersfield stranded eight runners and its most serious scoring threats were in the second

The Roadrunners had runners at first and second in the second and third innings and wasted a leadoff double by Daily in the seventh as Cal Poly earned its third shutout of the year.

Matt Arens and Michael Clark each pitched two scoreless innings and Thomas Triantos tossed a scoreless fifth for Cal Poly. Junior right-hander Cam Schneider struck out six during his three-inning stint on the mound and Kyle Smith worked the ninth.

Clark (2-3) earned the victory.

The loss went to CSU Bakersfield starter Elijah Parks (2-1) as he allowed all five runs in the third inning.

Cal Poly returns to Big West Conference play Friday through Sunday with a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton.
