World Surf League's inaugural Founders' Cup in Lemoore

Posted: Updated:

Legendary surfer Kelly Slater teamed up with World Surf League to host the inaugural Founders' Cup at Surf Ranch in Lemoore, CA May 5-6.

Surf Ranch, which is located nearly 100 miles off the coast of California, is a man-made wave pool created by Slater for inland surfers.

The first-ever team competition is comprised of 25 world-class surfers from five different countries.

Slater says the event is a perfect opportunity to put surfing in the Central Valley on the map.

"If you were going to have this technology and this property, that the interest in it and people's desire to be here and see it would be something different than the ocean," Slater said. "Everyone knows exactly where this place is. Everyone knows a lot about Lemoore now. Funny, people that never heard of this place all of a sudden want to come here and surf."

Second round action of the Founders' Cup starts on Sunday morning.
