Cal Poly beach volleyball players Torrey Van Winden and Emily Sonny have been selected to play in the 2018 USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships, May 10-12 in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
The finals on May 12 will be aired on NBCSN from 1-4 p.m. PDT.
The event will feature pairs from 32 schools, including all eight that made the made the NCAA Tournament and 24 at large bids. Schools that will be represented along with Cal Poly are: Florida State, Cal, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist, Louisiana State, Pepperdine, St. Mary's College of California, South Carolina, Texas Christian, Tulane, Alabama-Birmingham, North Carolina-Wilmington, Hawaii, Southern California and Washington.
Van Winden, a sophomore, finished her first season at Cal Poly playing all her matches at the No. 1 position, going 19-8 with wins over several ranked opponents. She and Tiadora Miric also won the first Big West Pairs Championship at the 2018 Big West Tournament.
Sonny, a sophomore, went 29-5, mostly at the No. 2 spot. Her 29 wins this past season are the most single-season wins in Cal Poly's history.
The top three teams from the tournament will earn the right to train with Team USA, and the winning pair will head to the World University Games in Hamburg, Germany in 2019.
