Nipomo boys swim and dive win program's first-ever CIF-SS Division 3 championship title

Posted: Updated:

Nipomo High School boys swimming and diving snagged the school's first CIF Southern Section Divisional title at Riverside Aquatic Center on Thursday. Last year, the Los Padres League championships placed second at CIF, the first time placing at a divisional championship. The Titans missed first place by 15 points that year.

This year, the team was determined reaching first place. They did just that by 13.5 points over Yorba Linda.

"We were really pumped this year and that pretty much led us to keep going and say, 'hey we have a chance this year. We're bigger stronger and we can win this'," said Blake Simpson, Nipomo sophomore swimmer.

The championship came down to the very last event as the Titans went back and forth in points over Yorba Linda. "We were all super focused and ready to go to make sure we kept the lead and make sure if anything, it got wider," said Wyatt Marsalek, Nipomo senior swimmer.

Sixth-year head coach Cody King has led the Titans to four consecutive league titles and says the program gets better each year. "Once we got down there, they knew what to do to take care of business," he said. "And really, they are a great group of kids that really manage themselves and take care of business."
