Cal Poly beach volleyball’s Emily Sonny and Torrey Van Winden went 5-1 over the weekend to finish third at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship.
30 pairs from 20 colleges competed in the tournament, which took place in Hermosa Beach.
The duo won their pool after wins over Cal’s Iya Lindahl and Jessica Gaffney as well as Pepperdine’s Corinne Quiggle and Deahna Kraft to move them on to the playoff round.
They began the playoff round by sweeping UNC-Wilmington’s Maddy Kline and Nicole Lott 21-10, 21-11. They then faced Pepperdine’s Quiggle and Kraft again, winning in three sets to move them on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, they would fall to eventual champions Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss of LSU in two close sets, which moved them into the third place game.
Facing Florida State’s Tory Paranagua and Vanessa Freire, Van Winden and Sonny dominated the first set, winning 21-11. The second set would prove to be much closer but the Mustangs would pull out the win 25-23 to secure the bronze medal.
Because they finished in the top three, they earn the opportunity to train with Team USA Beach Volleyball.
