Amazon pledges $80,000 to Cal Poly scholarships

Posted: Updated:

Amazon has pledged $80,000 to the Cal Poly Scholars Program, a program aimed at recruiting and retaining low-income students from California high schools.

The money will go toward four-year scholarships benefiting students in computer science or software engineering.

"This generous gift provides the means for eight accomplished students to attend and be supported at Cal Poly, and it moves the university closer toward our goal of expanding the Scholars program to all students in need on our campus," said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. "Our strong industry partnerships are key to our ability to give all low-income California students the opportunity to benefit from Cal Poly's Learn by Doing philosophy."

The program is open to all California high school graduates who are admitted to the university and meet certain financial criteria as determined by their financial aid application.

The program provides students with an annual scholarship, credit toward a technology package, a living/learning community on campus for their first two years of enrollment, and proactive advising and support to help ensure their academic success.

There are currently more than 240 Cal Poly Scholars.
