UPDATE: Compton remains in lead over Paulding by 81 votes

Posted: Updated:

Lynn Compton has widened her lead over challenger Jimmy Paulding in the race for the San Luis Obispo County District 4 Supervisor seat, but it's still a close race.

New election returns released Monday afternoon show Compton, the incumbent, with 8,798 votes and Paulding with 8,717, a difference of just 81 votes.

The San Luis Obispo County Clerk-Recorder's Office says it may take weeks before a final candidate is declared the winner. The next update is expected to come on Friday.

The race involving the two candidates, who don't see eye-to-eye on most issues, has been heating up over recent weeks. They agreed weeks before the June 5 election that it was going to be a tight race.

At the end of election night, just 83 votes put Compton in the lead over Paulding. On Friday, that lead narrowed to just 31 votes.

The 4th District Supervisor seat serves Huasna, Cuyama, Arroyo Grande, Nipomo, Oceano, and Edna Valley.

KSBY reached out to both Compton's and Paulding's campaigns for comments on the latest returns.

KSBY reached out to both candidates Monday for comment.

Compton's campaign says her statement remains unchanged from last week: "This is a very close race and we look forward to a speedy conclusion.  In the meantime, as the county finishes its work, we are awaiting the results like everyone else.”

Paulding told KSBY, "We worked hard for each and every vote, and we feel confident that we'll pull ahead. It looks like it’s going to come down to the line though. We are very appreciative for all of the hard work the County Clerk’s staff is putting into ensuring every vote is counted.”
