Santa Maria's "Safe N' Strong" program to keep local kids active and healthy this summer began Monday.

About 20 kids were playing dodgeball in Miami Park today, thanks to the city of Santa Maria's Recreation and Parks Department.

They're expecting up to 150 kids at 11 parks across the city over the summer. City staff will be sponsoring free games, sports and art activities for kids ages 6-12 years old.

"We want to give kids an opportunity to have some recreation during the summer; get 'em outdoors and out of the house while mom and dad are still working," said Jason Davie, Santa Maria recreation supervisor.

The program is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekday until Aug. 10.
