Cannabis tax workshops in San Luis Obispo

Posted: Updated:

Members of the cannabis industry can attend three workshops in July to learn how to report and pay cannabis taxes.

The workshops are hosted by the San Luis Obispo County Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector.

Currently licensed cannabis-related businesses, a company in the process of getting licensed, those that are selling cannabis but haven't started the business licensing process or anyone that needs guidance to start their cannabis business is welcome to attend.

The meetings will be held at 105 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo, rooms 161 and 162.

The meeting times are:

  • Monday, July 9 from 1-3 p.m.
  • Monday, July 9 from 6-8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 11 from 2-4 p.m.

"We met with the public and the cannabis industry before proposing the tax," said Jim Erb, County Auditor-Controller-Treasurer-Tax Collector. "We would like to continue that collaborative process now that voters have approved the tax.  We're ready to help these businesses comply with the collection and remittance requirements."

The tax was implemented July 1 and applies to medical and recreational cannabis sales. Cannabis businesses, growers, distributors and delivery services are affected by it.

"The tax will be self-reported monthly, which is the same model used to report and remit transient occupancy tax for the hospitality industry," Erb said. "We want to teach business how to do it correctly, so they can maintain a current status. Falling behind on reporting will result in penalties and interest and the potential to lose a business license, not to mention it can be very difficult to catch up."
