Holiday Fire reaches 100% containment

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters gained 100 percent containment of the Holiday Fire in Goleta on Tuesday.

The fire, which broke out Friday evening in the area of Holiday Hill Road and Fairview Avenue, burned 100 acres and destroyed 13 homes and 15 outbuildings.

The fire was fueled by strong winds and 100-degree temperatures.

Firefighters say the quick-moving nature of the fire made it especially challenging to tackle.

"It was being pushed down the canyon by these 40-mile an hour winds and it hop-scotched down the canyon," said Mike Eliason, Santa Barbara County Fire Department. "It was more like a tornado with the damage pattern."

Another problem, Eliason says, was that the wind blew the embers horizontally, causing them to get into the attics of some homes and causing those homes to burn from the inside out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
