Vandenberg Air Force Base transitions to Combined Space Operations Center

Posted: Updated:

Vanbenberg Air Force Base is celebrating the opening of a Combined Space Operations Center.

The Air Force currently operates a Joint Space Operations Center. The name change signifies greater cooperation between the U.S. and key allies.

The U.S., the U.K., Australia and Canada are teaming up to monitor satellites, the International Space Station and military operations around the world.

"Space is a warfighting domain, just like air, land and sea. Strong alliances are vital, and the U.S. National Space Policy is clear on the importance of partnering with nations that share U.S. objectives to promote the preservation and long-term sustainability of the space environment," said Air Force General John Raymond.

Approximately 350 people work at the Combined Space Operations Center, which tracked about 23,000 objects in the sky everyday.
