Major crashes on Highway 101 slow traffic

UPDATE (3:47 p.m.) - Two people have been transported to Cottage Hospital with major injuries following a three-vehicle crash on Highway 101 Southbound, north of El Capitan State Beach.

Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to the accident around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday. 

Authorities said a car was driving the wrong way on Highway 101 Southbound and hit a pickup towing a travel trailer. The impact pushed the pickup into the exit lane, the wrong-way driver continued on another 100 yards until she hit another car head-on.

Responders said the driver of the wrong-way vehicle and a passenger suffered major injuries and were transported to the hospital. Three other people involved in the crash were not hurt.

CHP is still on scene investigating the accident, responders are warning drivers to avoid the area. 


UPDATE (3:06 p.m.) - Highway 101 traffic at El Capitan state park is being diverted to Highway 154 because of a multiple-vehicle crash.


Two major accidents on Highway 101 are slowing traffic in Santa Barbara County.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle flipped on 101 Northbound at El Sueno and is blocking two lanes of traffic. Authorities said there is debris in the road and the accident will take time to clean up.

The other accident is on Highway 101 Southbound at El Capitan. Deputies said four vehicles are involved and are blocking all lanes of traffic. Responders have not given an update on the conditions of the people involved.

Authorities are warning drivers to use caution while driving through the area.
