Cuesta's psychiatric program receives top honors from state

Posted: Updated:

A local education program is earning top honors across the state.

Cuesta College's Psychiatric Technician Program earned the highest ranking strong workforce star recognition from the state.

That means graduates were all employed in their field of study and earned significantly more money.

The program partners with the Department of State Hospitals in Atascadero and prepares students to provide nursing and therapy services for mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or developmentally disabled people.

"It's not an easy thing but if you can get through it, it's so worth it," said Jasmine Harris, psych tech trainee and student. "So worth it to know that you're going to go from having a job to having a career in a year and knowing hat you can not only support yourself but support your family. That's what I'm so looking forward to being able to do."

The program is offered three times a year. Applications are currently being accepted for classes starting in January.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 7.
