Cal Poly adds mandatory session on diversity for students participating in WOW

Posted: Updated:

Cal Poly freshmen and new transfer students participating in Week of Welcome will attend a new session this year, focused on inclusion and diversity.  The change comes in the wake of several racial incidents in the spring.

Cal Poly Spokesperson Matt Lazier says school leaders want to emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion.  Students who go through WOW will participate in the mandatory new session this year, which will focus on appreciating the differences in individuals and the experiences they bring to the campus. Jamie Palton, Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion in Student Affairs, will lead the sessions. Students will participate in different activities to learn about other students and share information about themselves.

Students arrive this weekend ahead of the Fall Quarter to participate in the annual Week of Welcome orientation program.
