Before the iconic Great American Melodrama puts on its popular holiday production, the venue is hosting a unique concert series this month.

The theater in Oceano is best known for its vaudeville shows but it's giving audiences a different type of production - one that will transport you back to 1969.

The music that defined a generation and paved the way for music festival culture is rocking and rolling the Melodrama.

Co-owner of the Great American Melodrama, Lynne Schlenker, says she's excited to host a series of 50th anniversary Woodstock tribute concerts.

"We used to do concerts here many years ago and haven't done anything like that in a while and I know that musicians have always loved this small, intimate environment," Schlenker said.

Five local bands will get the Central Coast grooving, playing hits by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Santana and the rest of your favorite Woodstock sensations.

The first round of shows this week was a huge success.

"It was fabulous," Schlenker said. "People were just angst with excitement and the music. They were dancing and had a really wonderful time."

Tickets are selling fast for the remaining two shows, this upcoming Monday and Tuesday night.

Schlenker hopes the concert is an opportunity to share classic rock and roll with the next generation.

"You don't have to be a hippy at all but what you do need is just a good open mind, you need to really enjoy the music."

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday with the show starting at 7 p.m. Tickets may be bought online. Food, beer and wine will be available for purchase at the event.
